It’s two days before my trip and I am so ready. I’m almost done packing (I’m a late packer most of the time I pack the night or morning before), I’ve planned out my outfits. I’ve notified my bank and T-mobile that I’m going to China. I’m set. Let’s do this. I’m excited. There’s always a little extra excitement before you leave for trip whether it’s a vacation or study abroad experience.

A lot of people keep asking me why I’m going to China. I mean yes, I am an International Relations (IR) major, but my concentration is not Asia. So why would I sign up for this trip? I always respond to why not? Why would I not take advantage of this opportunity? I mean how often are we offered discounted trips to China? Now is the time to do. I’m young. I’m single. I don’t have a big job commitment. If you’re in the same situation, forget your worries.

How do you do it?

  1. Don’t let fear control you. Take every opportunity you can that comes your way. College is the time to do things. If something that sparks a tiny fire in you, do it. Whether it’s in your comfort zone or not, do it. The worst thing you can do is let fear control you. I understand some fears can be beneficial, but don’t let fear control you and dictate how you live your life. The most exciting things happen outside of your comfort zone.

  2. Don’t worry about who is doing it too. I’m going on this trip essentially alone. I mean it’s with my school and we have had 3 pre-departure meetings, but no one I know is going. The first pre-departure meeting was the first time I saw everyone going on this trip before. I have always been that way though. I traveled hundreds of miles away from home for college with any friends joining me. I’ve gone to concerts and movies alone. I’m not an introvert at all. My personality thing is ENFJ so I’m clearly very extraverted. It’s because I want to do something, I do it. I’ve been like that for years and because of that I have so many great experiences.

What are you missing out on because of fear or because you’re too worried about who else is doing it? In the words of Shia Labeouf, “Just do it!”

Pic* of me in Muscat, Oman. I went on the trip all the way across the world and did not know anyone either. Life happens outside of your comfort zone.
