Hot Pot Fun Night

Like previously stated I have so much more I want to talk about from our trip. It was such a great experience don’t want to miss any exciting stories.

On our last day in Beijing five of us hopped into a taxi and rode an uncomfortably 20 minutes to a hotpot restaurant.  It turned out to be the most fun night in Beijing. So what is hotpot, you say. Essentially, there is a pot in the middle of the table with boiling hot water (we split it into a spicy section and plain section because your girl hates spicy.). You order an assortment of meats, vegetables, and noodles. These items come out uncooked. Once the water is completely boiling you drop the food into the pots and it cooks it. It seems easy right? Well if you don’t know Chinese ordering can be extremely difficult. Luckily one person from our group spoke basic Chinese, but it was still a struggle. Eventually we were able to communicate how much we wanted to spend and what we wanted to eat. That’s when the fun happened.

My biggest regret is not learning a little Chinese before I left saying hello and thank you can only get you so far. Well the manager of the restaurant came out and helped us. The entire restaurant staff was so kind. They helped us the entire time. They were some of the kindest people. Of course seeing a bunch of Americans struggle to order and do the hotpoting by themselves caused quite a scene. I can’t imagine how many group chats our picture was sent to. It was just such a great experience. We had so many fun laughs. And the food was sooooo good. It was also a lot. There was some confusion about the price we wanted to each spend 100 Renminbi (which is Chinese currency). Well with all five of us that was 500 Renminbi. And 500 Renminbi was wayyyy too much. We were all so full by the end of the night. If could write a review on yelp I would. The kindness we were shown was exceptional. At the end, the manager gave us his business card so the next time I am in Beijing I will definitely go back.
